Golfo Dulce: A Birder’s Paradise

With over 900 bird species in the country, a local birder has set a new record of spotting 732 bird species in 2016. Chances are, the majority of birds he ticked off his checklist he found in the Southern Pacific Lowlands of Costa Rica. This region is teaming with wildlife, including tons of birds; hence National Geographic’s phrased it as ‘the most biologically intense place on earth’.

Golfo Dulce, the sweetest gulf of Costa Rica, our playground, is no exception. Located in between 2 National Parks (Corcovado National Park & Piedras Blancas National Park; the latter previously belonging to Corcovado NP), this body of water including its 3 major estuaries is home to countless birds. Due to the remoteness of this place, its few human inhabitants -therefore minimal (sound) pollution- and rich in ecosystems and nutrients, this is a birder’s paradise!

Our kayaking trips in this Golfo Dulce are a must for bird lovers, and if you’re not, you will become one, or at least be fascinated about these colorful, joyful, singing, flapping creatures. This experience starts at sunrise, when you’re awakened by a serenade of lovely songs brought to you by hundreds of birds complementing the beautiful gardens of your ecolodge.

You’ll hear nothing but cheerful sounds from the Great Kiskadee and the Flycatcher, the whistles of the Chestnut-Mandibled Toucans while feeding off the Palms, the soft sweet chirping of flocks of Red-lored Parrots in the higher tree branches, and the high pitched voices of the countless species of Hummingbirds speeding through the Heliconia flowers. Just to name a few.

While paddling along the shores of the Gulf, we’ll constantly see Pelicans dive in for a meal, Ospreys, Caracaras, Hawks, Falcons and other birds of prey, and even the Magnificent Frigatebird gliding high in the skies. Paddling through the dense Red Mangrove filled Rivers bird lovers won’t believe what birds to encounter.

Little blue, Snowy and Great Egrets, the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, the Green, Little and Great Blue, Tricolored Herons, and even the fascinating Boat-billed Heron and the incredibly looking Bare-throated Tiger Heron. The Roseate Spoonbills, Whimbrels, Wood-rails, White Ibis, Cormorants, Anhingas, Plovers, Sandpipers, Ringed and Belted Kingfishers, Woodpeckers, Swallows and Swifts. Too many to name.

“Wake up to the sounds of hundreds of Tropical birds surrounding your Glamping Cabin”

On our hikes within the dense rainforest of the Piedras Blancas National Park you’ll encounter species of a different sort. The beautiful Trogons, Spectacled Owls, Short-tailed Hawks, Woodcreepers, and even giants like the Crested Guan and the Great Curassow. You’ll hear them everywhere, while the real reward is when you spot them. But it really doesn’t stop here.

Even in the gardens of the several ecolodges we stay at during our multiday sea kayaking trips, the number of bird species are overwhelming. Apart from the ever present Macaws, Toucans, and Hummingbirds, you’ll be amazed by the colors of the many different species of Tanagers, Honeycreepers, Manakins, and Cotingas. They’re everywhere!

Our Tropical Sea Kayaking Trips are not only about paddling Mangrove Rivers and calm, warm, and glass-like waters surrounded by virgin lowland rainforests. It’s simply a wonderful place for marine & terrestrial wildlife enthusiasts, and especially bird lovers. Join us on our natural adventures in the Golfo Dulce.
